Merry-Christmas-Card

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the several gift collection/adopt-a-family events we had going on this month. In addition to taking care of some of our church families, we also helped spread some Christmas cheer to several needy families in the local area.

The Youth Group sponsored a young mother and her 3 young boys referred to us by the Pregnancy Resource Center. They collected and wrapped a storage bin full of presents at their annual Progressive Dinner.

One of our families “adopted” a single mother and her teenage daughter referred to us by the Promise Place, purchasing several Christmas gifts for each of them. Another church family provided financial assistance to a struggling family referred to us by the Real Life Center.

Thank you to everyone for your generosity.

Mike Stout’s small group spent Friday evening in Griffin cooking and serving approximately 30 homeless men and women staying at the House of Hope homeless shelter. The House of Hope is a Salvation Army homeless shelter that provides emergency housing for men, women, and families. They are open 7 days/wk from 4:30pm-8:00am, and serve breakfast and dinner.

This is a great opportunity for small groups who want to engage in an important ministry that is relatively close to home. The shelter is always in need of help, particularly with feeding. If this is a ministry that interests you, contact the Missions Coordinator for more information.

Kenneth and Samantha needed help with rent. They lost everything in a house fire last year, including 2 of their 7 children. Since then Kenneth has lost his job, and a portion of Samantha’s pay is being garnished to pay for expenses from the fire. They are now significantly behind in rent, but the landlord is working with them the best he can. We paid a month of their rent, and sent them a gift card to pay for some of their other needs.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to our collection of groceries in support of Fayette Samaritans. We collected approximately 15 bags of groceries and diapers, which will be delivered this week. Fayette Samaritans continues to do their best to keep up with the need for groceries as area residents continue to cope with economic conditions. Our donation is helping them to meet that need.

Kim and her husband were in desperate need of assistance. He is a disabled veteran who suffered a severe brain injury when his vehicle was hit with an IED. He now suffers from severe migraines and PTSD that make it difficult for him to function. Kim was recently laid off when her company was downsized, and has been unable to find another full-time job. She was able to find a part-time job working from home, but that job is also in jeopardy as their phone and internet service have been turned off. They were facing eviction, as well as the termination of their water and electric service if payments were not made immediately. The Real Life Center and the United Way were able to pay their rent and phone service; we were able to pay off their utility bills.

We made a donation to Fayette Senior Services’ Project Love campaign. Funds raised by this campaign augment FSS’s Meals on Wheels program by enabling them to provide holiday meals for over 250 recipients. Funds are also used to provide doctor-prescribed dietary supplements and “shelf meals” (meals that do not need refrigeration).

Our Operation Christmas Child gift collection was a great success! We collected 32 gift boxes that will be shipped to needy children worldwide.

Operation Christmas Child is a ‘global Christmas gift exchange’ project operated by Samaritan’s Purse. The mission of Operation Christmas Child is to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way to needy children around the world by collecting and distributing shoeboxes filled with toys, school supplies, personal items, and other gifts as Christmas gifts to millions of children each year.

Cassandra was recently served an eviction notice because she has been unable to pay her rent. She lost her full-time job after her car broke down and she was unable to get to work. She now relies on temp jobs until she can find another full-time job, but the decrease in pay, combined with the cost of repairing her car, has caused her to struggle financially. She also has custody of her 6 year old granddaughter. Along with the Real Life Center and Saint Vincent de Paul, we were able to pay her overdue rent.
